Itinerary

Day 1 From Tbilisi to Omalo

Pickup by guide in Tbilisi and transfer to Alvani. Lunch in the village, switching to 4WD cars and departure for Tusheti. Narrow, dusty road climbs from the lowlands to the 2900m high Abano pass and offers thrilling views into the valley below. Descent to Omalo, the largest settlement in Tusheti. In the afternoon visit of fortified Keselo hill. Dinner and accommodation at the guesthouse in Omalo.

Day 2 Trip to the Oreti lake
distance 28km, 1482m and 1482m

After the breakfast starts the horseriding part of the tour. First, we will get familiar with our horses and ride them on a flat, wide track to Kumelaurta to get familiar with them. Then starts the climb to the Oreti lake - first through the beautiful forest, then through meadows and pastures. From the lake, lying right below the Russian border, we will admire almost the whole Tusheti. Then we will return the same way and spend a night at the guesthouse in Omalo.

Day 3 From Omalo to Gogrulta
distance 11.7km, 1150m and 1076m>

Next two days will be a bit easier so we can recover from the Oreti lake. During this period, we will be exploring little-visited parts of Tusheti along the Gometsari Alazani river. First, we will cross this river and ascent to the Khakhabo village. From there, the trail climbs to the Apakurta pass which offers nice views into adjacent valleys. In the afternoon, we will reach Gogrulta village, spectacularly located on a cliff above the Gometsari Alazani valley. We will spend the night at the local guesthouse.

Day 4 From Gogrulta to Verkhovani
distance 15km, 450m and 820m>

In the morning, we will climb through the woods to the Kitemta mountain (2418m). From here, we will follow the ridge which separates Gometsari Alazani and Vestomkhevi valleys until we reach Vestomta village. From here, the trail starts going down - we will enter the woods again and cross small villages Buchukurta and Iliurta and reach the bottom of Gometsari Alazani by the Jvarboseli village. We will cross the river and not much later, will reach the Verkhovani village where we will spend a night at the local guesthouse.

Day 5 Crossing of Nakle-Kholi pass to Dartlo
distance 16.8km, 1310m and 1220m

A difficult day. After the breakfast starts a difficult climb to the Nakle-Kholi pass - at some steeper sections, we will dismount and continue on foot. Once we reach the pass, we will be able to enjoy almost aerial views of Pirikiti and Gometsari valleys. It is also the highest point of our tour with the elevation of 2920m. From there, we will descend to the Parsma, where we will admire it´s imposing towers. From Parsma, we will ride on a wide and flat track to Dartlo, one of the most charming villages in Tusheti. Here, we will part with our horses and spend a night at the local guesthouse.

Day 6 Dartlo & transfer to Tbilisi

In the morning, we will have an option to further explore Dartlo and climb to the Kvavlo fortress some 300 meters above the village. Then we will board the jeep and depart on a long, but scenic drive back to Tbilisi.

WHAT HAPPENS AFTER YOU BOOK THE TOUR:

If you consider joining one of our tours, you should understand how our booking process works - so what happens after you fill in that form to the right.

  1. First, you need to register for a tour. We don't collect deposits at this stage but expect clients to fill in the form only in case of serious interest, after they have everything sorted out and are positive that they will be able to participate.
  2. We will send an email asking you to confirm your email address, to establish contact and be sure that we received valid address. Once confirmed, we will put you on the list of participants. Then, after the tour meets minimal threshold of required participants, we will send you another e-mail, inform you that the tour is guaranteed to run and if deposit is necessary, ask for it.
  3. After all participants sent deposit payment, the tour is green-lighted and we start with necessary arrangements.
  4. If there are still not enough participants one month before the start of the tour, we inform you about the situation and offer to run the tour at the increased price. If all participants agree to it and make a deposit, the tour goes ahead - and, of course, if more people book during the last months before the tour, the price goes down correspondingly, but at some moment we need to decide if to run it or not. If participants don´t agree with the higher price, the tour is cancelled and, if there is interest, we can work with them on some individual programs.
